The "From Order to Chaos and Back" exhibition marked the Final Degree Exhibition of the Graphic Design course, presented through a collaboration between ETIC in Lisbon and Southampton Solent University in the UK. Invited by Professor and Course Coordinator, Joana Areal, I had the honor to lead the design and art direction of the exhibition video identity, with the central piece being the poster. The concept behind the show was bold and thought-provoking, delving into current questions and exploring themes of love, consequences, and societal complexities. The challenge was to visually capture this juxtaposition of order and chaos while staying true to the exhibition's core essence.
The core of the visual solution revolved around a fixed and ordered typographic structure, exuding formality and a sense of control. Two complementary typefaces formed the foundation of the design, reinforcing a harmonious balance. To signify the emergence of chaos from order, we strategically introduced scribbles, artfully breaking the layout and creating intriguing disruptions. Additionally, fragments of the books that inspired the exhibition were seamlessly integrated into the designs, resembling a formal body of text, further emphasizing the sense of typographic order.
The posters, serving as the primary promotional material, were strategically placed all over the city, sparking curiosity and inviting the audience to engage with the exhibition. A simple and consistent grid system, coupled with random chaotic black stroked white lines, formed a captivating visual language that permeated the entire identity.
The project's success was achieved through collaborative efforts, supervised by Joana Areal and Ana Freitas. The final exhibition team took charge of designing social media materials and the room sheet, ensuring a cohesive and immersive experience for visitors.
